On June 11, 2020, the "Lhasa Weather Radar System Construction" project, organized by the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau, successfully passed its operational acceptance. Attendees included representatives from the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau, the Aviation Meteorological Office of the Civil Aviation Administration of Tibet, Xi'an Huateng Microwave Co., Ltd., and relevant departments.
Tibet's unique geographical location and complex topography give rise to a distinct, multi-layered climate, characterized by frequent and widespread meteorological disasters. These include droughts, floods, lightning strikes, hailstorms, strong winds, and severe cold damage—disasters that pose serious threats to the region's economic and social development, as well as to the safety and livelihoods of its people. To address these challenges, it is essential to establish a new meteorological observation system, further enhancing the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau's capabilities in weather monitoring, forecasting, early warning, and service delivery. This will provide robust meteorological support for critical areas such as flood and drought control, disaster prevention and mitigation, local economic development, and ecological conservation efforts.
The "Lhasa Weather Radar Monitoring System Construction" project utilizes a fully solid-state X-band Doppler weather radar system developed by Xi'an Huateng Microwave Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "our company"). All radar station sites are situated at altitudes exceeding 4,600 meters, with the Jiamashan Radar Station in Mozhugongka County standing even higher—at an impressive 5,471 meters above sea level—making construction exceptionally challenging. Since taking on the project in July 2018 and commencing on-site work, our company has consistently upheld the spirit of "tackling tough challenges and never giving up," demonstrating unwavering determination throughout the nearly two-year construction process. Despite facing numerous obstacles—including high-altitude cold conditions with limited oxygen, extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night, difficulties in transporting raw materials, and unreliable communication in remote areas—we meticulously managed every stage of construction, paying close attention to even the smallest details. By continuously refining our construction strategies and intensifying technical problem-solving efforts, we successfully overcame multiple construction hurdles specific to high-altitude, snow-covered mountain radar stations. As a result, we not only shortened the overall construction timeline for the radar stations but also completed the integration of radar system data into the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau ahead of schedule, earning high praise from our client.
Jin Qi, Deputy Director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau, stated: "The X-band radar stations recently constructed by the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau are all located at altitudes above 4,600 meters. Despite numerous challenges—including harsh weather conditions, steep and hazardous mountain terrain, and extremely limited transportation access—construction teams persevered for two years to successfully complete this ambitious project, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience. Once operational, these X-band meteorological radar stations will play a crucial role in fostering comprehensive, sustainable economic and social development along the region's key routes, while also strengthening ethnic unity and ensuring long-term stability in the area."

During more than one year of operation, our company’s X-band Doppler weather radar system has successfully withstood the challenging, high-altitude, and complex climatic conditions of the Tibetan region. Operating unattended, it has demonstrated outstanding product features such as maintenance-free operation and an exceptionally low failure rate, earning high praise from our customers. This X-band Doppler weather radar system, when integrated into a network alongside Tibet’s existing C-band Doppler weather radar systems, will effectively address the monitoring blind spots surrounding Lhasa, enabling high-resolution, high-precision, real-time detection and early warning of severe localized convective weather events. This enhanced capability will significantly improve the accuracy of localized forecasts for intense convective weather across multiple regions near Lhasa, while also greatly bolstering meteorological support for major events in Lhasa’s urban core. Ultimately, the system will provide robust scientific decision-making support for critical applications such as artificial rainfall enhancement, hail suppression operations, and aviation services.
For more than 20 years since its establishment, Xi'an Huateng Microwave Co., Ltd. has remained committed to the research, development, production, and service of weather radar products, driven by stringent technical standards, superior quality, and exceptional efficiency. The company consistently focuses on technological innovation in the fields of weather radar systems and microwave technology, earning the trust and confidence of both customers and the market through relentless dedication. The successful completion and acceptance of the Lhasa Weather Radar System project mark a significant milestone, as they signify that our company’s expertise in constructing high-altitude radar meteorological stations has been fully recognized by both clients and society. As part of the Tibet Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau’s 13th Five-Year Plan initiatives, the next phase of site selection and construction for additional weather radar stations will proceed as scheduled. Our company will continue to collaborate closely with relevant departments, actively contributing our expertise and resources to support Tibet’s ongoing development and progress.
